Case Study · Branding + Development

A retreat brand built to sell an escape from screens — from a screen.

Black Hills Retreat Center is a 60-acre Christian retreat property inside the Black Hills National Forest, built around one deliberate choice: no cell service, no wifi, no distractions. It hosts summer youth camps, church and ministry retreats, staff planning events, and family groups, with lodging for up to 280 overnight guests. The brand and site needed to sell that disconnection as the whole point, while still handling the very online job of getting a group booked.

The challenge

The property's biggest selling point — zero connectivity — is also its hardest marketing problem: a website has to convince someone, from behind a screen, to bring their group somewhere screens don't work. On top of that, four very different kinds of planners (youth camp directors, church staff, ministry teams, and families) all needed to find their own path fast, without the property itself able to answer a single online question once they arrived.

The approach

We made the "unplug and grow" identity the headline, not a footnote — leaning into the disconnection instead of downplaying it. The site splits early into group-type paths so a youth camp director and a church retreat planner each land somewhere built for them, and the inquiry flow stays simple and phone/email-first, matching how a property with no on-site connectivity actually operates. Photography carries the rest: the lodge, dining hall, bonfire circle, and forest setting doing the selling that copy alone couldn't.

  • Brand system built around the center's own "unplug and grow with God" identity
  • Separate landing paths for youth camps, church retreats, ministry staff events, and family groups
  • Simple, phone/email-first inquiry flow suited to a property that's intentionally offline
  • Photography-led pages selling the lodge, dining hall, and forest setting

Selling an experience people won't fully understand until they unplug and show up?

If your brand's biggest strength is something that's hard to show on a screen, that's exactly the kind of positioning problem Branding solves.
